Olive and her brother were evacuated from from Manchester to Chinley in Derbyshire three days before the war started. They set off at 7am with strict instruction that her and Douglas her brother should remain together. But, nobody was able to take a boy and a girl so they eventually had to settle for accomodiation next door.
Months went by with no bombing activities and so they decided to return home to Manchester. They were home for approximately 9 months when the Manchester Blitz started and they were re-evacuated to Blackpool. This time Olive and her brother were at different schools and so were evacuated to different locations. Olive was evacuated to a two bedroomed Bed and Breakfast property in Blackpool, and when paying guests arrived Olive has to share the other room with the whole host family.
Douglas, Olive's brother who was living about 5 miles away at the time used to walk across to Blackpool on a Sunday with his friends to visit her, and she would save her money to give to him for the bus journey home.
