We lived in Bromfield, 2 ½ miles from Ludlow. At the time of this story I would have been about 7 years old. My mother used to listen to Lord Haw Haw everyday at 1pm. And on this particular day after his opening, 'Germany Calling' and all that he said, 'I want to speak to the people of Ludlow'. He assured us that he knew all about Ludlow and told us lots of things including that the clock on the Butter Cross was a minute fast or slow (I forget which) and that was true. I remember it as though it was yesterday.

This frightened me so much that when I went to bed that night, I got under the sheets, pulled them right over my head, and I put my hands together and said the first prayer I ever said on my own. Please God, Don’t let the Germans win the War!’ I remember the words to this day. I wasn’t ever frightened after that.
