Many of the female workers at the Bristol Aero Engine factory were formerly employed in the local textile mills, prior to the outbreak of World War 2.
In those bygone cotton and weaving mills, it was a tradition at Christmas time for the young (and not-so-young!) ladies to treat the workmen to a kiss and a cuddle whilst holding a sprig of mistletoe over the heads of the men and young lads.
Thpleasure of being embraced and kissed by those amorous Bristol ladies was a new and pleasant experience for these engineering workmen, who had previously worked in an all-male industry..this was the reason why they gave a generous contribution to a collection, which went towards paying for a shop floor Christmas party to take place on the day before the Christmas holiday break. Incidentally, this was only 3 days; Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, which was rather a short break compared to today's lengthy holidays.
