21 years old when war was declared. Worked 10 miles away in Glasgow. All the signs were taken down so you couldn't tell what town it was, station signs were brought down. I got transferred back to Airdrie and that's when all the ship yards were bombed at Clydebank. I had three brothers who were all in the army. It was just my mother, my sister and I left at home. When the sirens started we sheltered in a stone shelter. We could see the flames for 12 miles, when they bombed the ship yards. I met my husband who was a friend of my brother's from the same regiment and I was married when I was 24. You would get 1 egg and 2 ounces of meat and a small portion of tea. From the rations book you could get half of what you were entitled to. I then moved to Bowness and it was a restricted area due to the docks. This meant my family were unable to visit. Celebrating was just me and my baby at home. The boy that was near us arrived home with bananas and treats. Sweets were rationed. Sweets were given for sugar.
