Hilda now retired to Church Stretton, Shropshire recalled her wartime experiences -
For my 21st birthday my mother made a beautiful cake. My brothers were in the merchant navy and had extra rations and my mother had skimped to save for the cake.
My mother had just finished the cake and left it on the kitchen table. The sirens went off and we all jumped down into the air raid shelter. When we came up the house had been damaged by blast from the bombs but the cake was still standing spotless on the kitchen table.
