My brother Tom and his friend, the lad Ross were playing billiards at Canal Street one night when the siren went. Tom asked his friend to stay until the all clear. He said his mum would be worried. The boy just got to his home in Mitchell Avenue and a direct hit killed him. I think he was only about 16 yrs old. Tom joined the Merchant Navy shortly after..
What I mostly remember about the War was the 'double summer time'. The nights were clear until about 12 p.m. The days were long and sunny. At night we had a lot of clear skies, often we could even see the planes.
Thinking back now, at least we knew who the enemy was. I preferred that kind of War. Today it seems to be more about terrorism.
