I took in two evacuees from Guernsey and was paid 12 shillings per week for each boy. Food was on ration and potatoes were scarce. I registered the boys with two separate greengrocers to enable me to get two allocations of potatoes. When we were short of meat we used to have mashed potato served on a slice of unbuttered bread with gravy made from an Oxo cube.
The boys settled well. They used to push my daughter who was 4 years old about in a go kart my husband had made for them.
My husband and I used to teach swimming. We taught the boys to swim.
My husband made the boys write to their fathers who were away fighting every week. They were Desert Rats. Peter's father came to visit us on one of his leaves to thank us for taking care of his son Peter.
(Sunny Lowry was the 17th lady to swim the Channel successfully in 1933.)
