At 14, my school days over, I commenced 4 years of travelling 24 miles per day to get to work and back, passing through the East End of London which suffered very heavy bombing in the Blitz. My clerical duties with a wholesale food company ensured the constant supply of food to the civilian population. When not working, at the weekend I joined the long queues for rationed food. At the height of the blitz we spent most nights sleeping in the Anderson shelter. We lost 1 house nearby from a direct hit.
