My late father told me about the following whilst he was in hospital recivering from a heart attack.
'Cheshire was a master at scrounging aircraft that would improve the targeting performance of the Squadron, they were having particular problems at this time with accurate targetting. Cheshire thought that the new American Mustang fighter bomber would be the ideal thing for this mission. So he borrowed one from the neighbouring American airbase, and flew it very successfully that night on this mission.
However:-
When he got back from the mission he was hopping mad and said that the dashboard lights didnt work. and told my Father to sort it.
On checking it out my Father found that Cheshire hadnt activated the cockpit light control correctly and there was no fault found. My Father signed the aircraft log as such and reported to Cheshire what he had found.Explaining very diplomatically that he should have kept the button pressed for 30 seconds then he would have had no problems.
Cheshire then proceeded to sign the log with the comments to put it politly 'The above pilot is a silly idiot' though the language apparently was slightly more fruity.
