My father was born in 1882 and joined the royal navy in 1896 when he was sixteen. He served on 25 different ships between 1898 and 1943/3. During his time here he trained in gunnery and torpeodoes for submarines and was a qualified deep sea diver. He left the navy then and became HM Chief inspector of Search Lights for the South of England. When the Germans sent the searchlights and radar were one of the first lines of defense and he was responsible for the equipment. At some point during the war he was also involved in removing mines from the Aegean Sea. As the war ended in 1945 we moved back to my mothers home town of Lincoln where my father went to work in the removal and haulage industry.
