My father was called up and sent for Officer training, I assume because he had been educated at a grammar school. I know he mentioned initial training at Wrotham in Kent. He went out into the Atlantic and then through Africa and up through Italy, and down into Croatia. He was initially in the Pay Corps. but then went into the Pioneer Corps. He was in charge of a troop of Italians and learnt to speak fluent Italian. We still have the carving knife he took off someone, who was brandishing it at him. We have also got his medals and kit bag. (Very useful for me to take to Guide camp in later years).
