My mother was French. There were four daughters, we lived in Timperley. Two of the sisters decided to join the Free French in London. When I left school I joined the day nursery as a Child Care Reserve during the war, and I became a teacher later. There was a railway behind the house. During the air raids we'd go to a shelter underground, dug between two gardens. The first thing they'd say was 'E-e-e-yeah, we've got the shelter' (pure manchester accent.)
My father was in the special forces. At the end of the war he joined the engine forces and went to Germany to dismantle the weapons.
We were in France in August 1939, but returned home in haste.
