When I was posted to Slough there was one incident which made me very sad. ( I didn't like Slough anyway because it always smelt of Mars Bars!)
We were called to take the train to Fenchurch Street station and the bus to Tilbury docks. We weren't told the reason for our mission until we got there, but we had to carry our armbands and red tops in our pockets.
We found that we had to escort German Nurses from a captured hospital ship down the gangway and take them to a large warehouse type place. Sandwiches were set out for them to eat, but they were so stale that the edges had curled up. It was no suprise that they refused to eat them! We had to escort them to the toilet, but they had to keep the door open all the time. Others then took them to Purbright where they would be debugged.
Behind the nurses came the German 'bigwigs' from the ship. They had long coats reaching the ground. The British sailors were spitting in front of them as they came down the gangway. I did not think that it was at all necessary to treat them in this this way.
