‘You may of heard about ‘bowling for the piglet’. A piglet was a very popular prize at fetes and fairs. Everybody tried to keep a pig. The regulations here allowed everybody to keep and kill two pigs each year privately. The pig would be fed on leftovers and the sty would normally be constructed next to the privy at the bottom of the garden. ‘The pig was a good way to supplement the rations of meat. You always had lots of visitors when word got round that you had killed your pig.’
This story was submitted to the people’s War site by a volunteer from CSV Oxford on behalf of Geoffrey Green. It is the edited transcript of a taped interview and he gave written permission for the material to be edited and published.
