This story has been added by CSV volunteer Linda Clark on behalf of the author Dougie Alford. His story was given to the Trebah WW2 Video Archive, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2004. The Trebah Garden Trust understand the site's terms and conditions.

The Coastguard would patrol from Cape Cornwall until they met up with the Pendeen Coastguard, then they would come back again. We used to watch for his white hat going past our place before we would go to the beach because if he caught us, he would send us home again. One day, one of the local boys and I went down to the beach and we found a flying boot. We thought this was marvellous so we looked for another one and sure enough we found it under the rocks. "I got one, I found it" I called. There was always timber on the beach so, with the help of a large piece of timber, we retrieved the boot. "I got him" I called, "but there's some funny smell". There was a foot still in the boot so that put paid to the boots; we didn't take them home. We always looked under the rolled seaweed and one day we came up with two fingers. The next thing we knew we were being sent home by the Coastguard. The Coastguard patrol was about every hour so if we were caught he would either send us home or threaten to report us to the police. We used to go down to the beach every day, sometimes waiting in the cliff for the Coastguard to go past.
