My grandfather, at the end of the war, was stationed in Rotterdam, and billeted with a Dutch family.
He and his mates used to give their rations to a Dutch orphan who used to hang around them all the time and became a sort of mascot. My grandfather, who had a 6 year old son at the time (my uncle) adored this boy and tried to adopt him and bring him back to England, but the authorities wouldn't let him.
The Dutch family he was staying with were jewellers, and when he left, they wanted to give him a present for his family, but of course, it was impossible to get hold of the silver and gemstones they worked with, so they made a bracelet out of 10 cent pieces, which he gave to my mother. She gave it my daughter as a christening present which is quite fitting, as my daughter was born in Holland.
