I joined the waaf in l94l where at the beginning I was sent to Innesworth Lane, Gloucestershire for six weeks training. There together with other young women from all walks of life we shared nissan huts.
At 8 am every morning we had to be on the parade ground dressed in a vest, navy blue knickers (which we called black outs) and plimsolls.
At the beginning, being the first time away from home we were homesick. By the time the six weeks training had been completed there was a great camaradie between all of us.
There were various avalable and I chose to become a wireless operator.
When it was time to say goodbye to the young women we had shared the six weeks training we were upset. Unlike the army where they are posted as a unit, in the RAF you are posted as an individual.
Being the only one to have chosen the wireless course I was sent to Blackpool to learn the morse code. There I was billeted in a house with five other WAAFs where I shared a double bed over a bath - yes it was the bathroom. The only advantage being that we had hot water.
The houses where the WAAFs were billeted were owned by the landladies of Blackpool, where in peace time they were used by holidaymakers.
