I never heard my Grandfather speak about what happened to him or what he saw at Dunkirk and thinking about it now, it was probably because he wanted to forget.
There was one story which my Mother told me however, which I think is quite amazing.
My Grandfather, Bill was wading through the water to get to a boat. A plane came in over head and started shooting so he dumped his kit as it was weighing him down.
He finally managed to get to the boat but he couldn't climb up. He heard a voice and someone offering their arm to pull him up.
When he finally got in the boat he looked up at the man who pulled him out, only to see that it was his brother Charlie.
They later found out that they were at opposite ends of the beach prior to the evacuation
Bill Sadly passed away in 1997
