I was called up in 1942 when I was 18. I lived up the hill from Vauxhall, so decided to work there rather than in the forces or war work. I was put on the line and showed how to work three machines. We did six days and six nights a month from 7:30am till 5pm. I was cutting the gears for Trucks for the forces, so did not work on any of the tanks. I really did enjoy working there, we had some great times. Many families worked there, and they were always put near each other.
We ate in the Vauxhall canteen. The food was quite bland, but healthy.
A friend of mine worked at the American Canteen (above Woolworths in George Street). She would invite small groups of Americans back to her house on Richmond Hill for Brittish hospitality. I joined her and the crew of a Fortress for a lovely evening - they all seemed so young. The next day, they were all killed.
I married in 1945, when my husband had done his time in the Territorial army.
I worked for Vauxhall until January 1946, when I left of my own accord because the men came back and wanted their jobs back!
