I am 80 years old. I worked for the WAAF — Women’s Auxilary Air Force in Newcastle during bombings
I started as balloon operator and then as a nurse training. During D-Day I remember training and watching glider pilots in Cosford airfield, near Birmingham. (RAF).
I also remember going into shelters and watching bombs drop on Bristol. In the last part of the war I lived near Kent.
I think it’s really important to know how many people died. A lot of boys never came back. I always go to London to march with WAAF. Women then didn’t expect recognition, they had more humility. I feel they make a lot of fuss about things now. I lost a lot of friends.
