I lived in Birkenhead and we were surrounded by camps - Airforce, Army and sailors coming in and out of Liverpool. I worked in a water department (essential work) and every night there was dancing. I was in the GTC - Girls Training Corps. I was an officer. We used to go on parades on special days. The Home Guards were there.
A boy I went to school with (18 years old) was killed at Dunkirk.
After the war we had coupons for cothing and ration books. Everyone contributed their rations to make the wedding cake.
When I started work it was freezing because all the windows had been bombed out.
