Recognising Robert鈥檚 鈥楿ltimate Sacrifice鈥
After the war, Robert鈥檚 family received a commemorative scroll on behalf of King George VI, recognising Robert鈥檚 sacrifice and that of his family. The scroll bears the royal coat of arms and reads as follows:
鈥淕VI RI
This scroll commemorates
Marine R. Casson
Royal Marines
Held in honour as one who served King and Country in the world war of 1939-1945 and gave his life to save mankind from tyranny. May his sacrifice help to bring the peace and freedom for which he died.鈥
Robert is buried at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Ryes, Bazenville a short distance to the north-east of Bayeux. His Grave Reference is IV.B.2. Further information about Joseph and Robert has been posted to this site in stories A3723257, A3879732 and A3879804.
If anyone who served in No 45 Royal Marine Commandos with Robert has further information or any memories about him it would be interesting to hear from them.
