My Dad was ten, full of beans but lacking donuts!
The Americans were based in Liverpool and the kids knew where they were. Each day a jeep loaded up off London Road and headed out to Burton Wood. All it took was a long rope - a tight knot and a lamppost. Knot at the lam post, knot around the crate - and wait.
The Yank climbs in - revs up and heads off. The Rope went tight, the donuts crate stayed behind and twenty kids hit the street. A few minutes with jumpers tucked into shorts was all it took - the donuts bulged into the sweaters and then they legged it.
Donut tummy ache afterwards but they tasted sweet Dad says.
