At the beginning of World War 2 I was still at school and together with hundreds of schoolchildren was evacuated from London. I ended up in Hertfordshire in a large country mansion belonging to a very imposing woman - a real dragon!! - not a very happy experience, she even insisted that after a meal we should spread breadcrumbs on the carpet just to make sure that the maid cleanded up properly. During the period we called the phoney war after running away hoping to get home I, in common with others, finally made it back home getting a job and experiencing the Blitz. During the Blitz when at home we were always having our meals interrupted by the air raid sirens when we all had to go down to the Anderson Shelter we had in the garden, having to spend many hours there. During the day when at the office we always organised something to keep us occupied i.e. concerts, quiaaes and even a turn at the Uijgi Board but that did not last long because the 'Powers that be' found us other things to do. It was a very frightening time because you always worried if your mum and dad would be home and even if there was a home to go back to.
Later in my then job as a shorthand typist I was drafted into the Postal Censorship. I already knew the boy who I eventually married later. He and I shared many happy times when he was on leave from the army and we were married when he returned from Germany prior to being sent to the Far East.
After the end of the war in Europe the atom bomb caused the Japanese to surrender and we were married before he went out to Tripoli as a peace keeping force to keep the jews and arabs apart.
My children and my grandchildren are always very interested about that period of our history and have grown up patriotic knowing what a wonderful country we live in and what we owe to our fighting forces.
