Cycling home with a friend to lunch from Chichester High School we were approaching Stirling Road railway bridge when we heard a low-flying aircraft. Looking up we saw a Liberator banking and diving over our heads. There was a huge explosion and pieces of shrapnel and debris clattered down from the skies. I rushed across to pick up a piece of jagged shrapnel for a souvenir and dropped it immediately- it was red hot. I had to leave it there. The B24 had crashed upon a laundry (near Velyn Road) and I believe it killed several people. My friend Don's mother worked there, but was OK.
Later we found out that the aircrew had of this damaged aircraft had pointed the plane out to sea and baled out but the aircraft turned on its own back to Chichester.
