As I was only a boy during the war I have no active service memories except the fact that my father was invalided out of the RAF very early in the war.
We lived in a quiet suburban road in Bramhall, away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.
Two memories come back to me about the war.
The first was that my grandmother lived in London, and for reasons unbeknown to me, my parents decided that we should go and visit her. It must have been around the time of the blitz as I can remember having to make a run for the cupboard under the stairs while the bombs fell. Fortunately, we all survived.
My second memory is of a flying bomb going over our house during the night. It was terrifying listening to the motor droning overhead and when it went silent we lay in bed expecting the worst. We heard the next morning that it had hit a shop in Davenport, near Stockport.
