In the Royal Navy aboard HMS Rother we had some very sad times and lived through some very dangerous times. We also had some good times aboard ship.

When in dock in West Africa we were able to go ashore and often would be able to buy parrots. We would probably have four or five at a time. On the return journey these parrots would soon pick up on conversations and sell very well in places like Liverpool.
