I was born in Whetstone, Herts and was about 8 years old, when the War started. At first everyone would go into the air raid shelteres but after a while they did not bother. When we went into the shelter we would go in at about 8 or 9 o'clock, sleep and then get up and back into the house. We were told never to show a light and always carry your gas mask - On one occasion I had a very severe telling off from my Dad for having fogotten mine .
While at Highgate School, London there was a Doodlebug exploded over the school - the engine was found a few yards away.
One of my friends was bombed out twice.
Walking down Oxford Street, London, I can remember seeing John Lewis burnt out and all you could see were the black beams.
During the War everyone was friendly, afterwards they went back to being normal.
There was still rationing and shortages.
We did celebrate VE Day.
My Father had a volunteer car pool and he had to take someone to the other side of London - he was held up in the tunnel for two hours, which for him was a nightmare as he had a fewar of being trapped.
