When I was five, we were all asked to save 鈥淪hip Ha鈥檖ennies鈥 to help towards the war effort. When I had saved a whole pound鈥檚 worth 鈥 it took me a very long time to save it out of my pocket money 鈥 we handed it in. My name, and the fact that I had saved a pound, was announced over the loudspeaker system at the old Forge Garage at Hagley (it really was like an old forge then with a stable for shoeing horses 鈥 not like it is now). Just opposite the garage there were the bus stops, and there were several people queuing for buses to Stourbridge, so they could all hear the announcements. I was so proud.
