I remember having to sleep under the table, or under the stairs on a double mattress. During the Battle of Britain, we never put on our pyjamas at all. They used to park the Ack-Ack Guns outside of your house, they鈥檇 shoot the planes as they came down the Mersey. The ATS girls were on the Promenade with the guns, helping to shoot them down. I was 10 at the time, I remember it very clearly. A man was coming home to bury his father, he was in the Air Force, and he didn鈥檛 make it; a landmine dropped on him, yards from his home. We used to go out and collect shrapnel, and get told off for it. I also remember; my sister was washing her stockings in the kitchen, she worked in the post office at the time, on night duty, a bomb dropped nearby and she found herself in another room with the blast, her hands covered in soap.
