I remember the air raid shelter being put up in the garden and getting our gas masks. The balloons going up and smoke screens being lit at night. Black out curtains being made, black strips on the windows. The first air raid going to the shelter, water in it in winter. Sharing food with friends. Clothing coupons, food coupons. Vegetables instead of flowers in the garden. two brothers and a sister joining the forces. Joining the cadets, serving meals and sewing for, then visiting the wounded ones. Swapping sweet coupons, the big party after the war. I have spoken to school children about the war.
