I am nearly 80 now. My Dad was too old to go in the forces, but my Mum hosted evacuee children, as well as American soldiers.
The American soldiers were up Bulwell, where Morrisons supermarket is now. They didn't stay with us for long.
We had a big house and a big garden and grew our own food. Our own potatoes, onions and tomatoes helped out with the rations. There is now a big church where our house used to stand.
My Mum had five girls and two boys of her own. She also had four or five evacuee children. Some were related and some weren't. One came from Hull. One of the Dads of the evacuees had a Victoria Cross. I enjoyed having the children staying with us.
