I was 6 years old in 1939. My father was away at war and my mother had been recalled into teaching so it was convenient for me to live with my grandparents. My Grandparents lived in the Bowerdean area of High Wycombe.
One early summers evening in 1944, Friday about 5pm, me and my grandfather were looking after the rabbits in the garden and we heard a doodlebug coming. This type of bomb used to make a noise like -bom.bom.bom.bom.bom.bom鈥.. , as it flew through the air. When it stopped making the noise, it was time to worry because then it glided silently to its unknown target. You never knew where it is going to land. If this one had gone one way it would have blown up the US 8th Airforce Bomber Command but it went in the other direction. My Grandfather saw it going towards the Gommes Furniture building in Terriers, (the firm made aircraft parts during the war). His bowling green was next door to it and he jumped on his bike and raced down there. My grandfather was 60 and still at work. He spent most of his spare time at the bowling green. All he could say when he came back was 鈥淚ts gone!鈥
