Frank & Jack Hoyland
This story concerns two Brothers fighting in different Units in the Africa campaigns of World War 2. Both Frank and Jack Hoyland had seen their share of the horrors of war from close up, Frank coming under heavy fire (in a seperate campaign at Anzio) and Jack likewise in Eritrea. Earlier on in the War they too had the worst kind of news possible when their other brother William was killed in action in an RAF accident.
Picture the scene then when after four years of fighting for seperate Regiments, not even knowing if the other Brother was still alive, Frank walked in to a bar in Eritrea and there was Jack!! You could only imagine the thoughts and emotions they both must have gone through. I'm sure an amazing night followed. During a taxi ride back to their respective camps, Jack (who was a bit of a lad) said to the Driver on demanding his fare "It's okay, Winnie would pay him this one".
Thankfully both Brothers survived the War and I got to see them again. I'm their younger Sister Norma, and although sadly they're both passed away now I think the story shows some good things could come out of adversity.
