This story was submitted to the People’s War Site by Three Counties Action, on behalf of Vivian Snowden, and has been added to the site with her permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I worked at the Stevenage Post Office and I was called S C and T (Sorting, Counting, Telegraphs and Telephones) I was the only Female in the district and probably the only Female in the country to do the job. I worked all day in charge of the sorting office, on late duty I had to go and balance the books which I thought was unfair. I do recall taking a telegram of a young man I know it said, ‘it is with the deepest regret we have to inform you that your son did not return from operations in Germany last night’. These are words I will never forget.
