I was coming out of school one afternoon and we saw a JU88 German bomber om fire. Finally it crashed on Rainham Marshes and as he saw us coming out of school he opened up his machine guns at us. The teacher being very quick, grabbed grabbed us all and bundles us back in school. The bullets missed and I鈥檓 here to tell the tale.
Another memory, there being a bombing raid overnight and a landmine parachute got caught in a tree outside St. Stephens Church in Forest Gate and as kids we were going up closely to examine the landmine until the police came and moved us away.
I did lose two very good school friends in the bombing, I helped to pull them out of the rubble, but sadly they died.
A V1 or V2 bomb dropped on Hussicks sweet factory and the houses at the back were badly damaged. My father and I rescued a mother and her baby. Looking back it must have seemed quite frightening to have a baby thrust in the arms of a 14 year old boy.
One night we had 3000 fire bombs dropped on three quarters of a square mile and we grabbed sandbags and threw these on top to extinguish the fires.
