Brrrr - now THAT's cold! Iced up guns on HMS Kent in the Arctic on Russian convoy duty
This picture has been contributed to the People鈥檚 War by the 大象传媒 Learning Centre on behalf of Harry Wright鈥檚 son John, with his permission.
Harry Wright was a petty officer on HMS Kent, a county class cruiser in the Russian convoys. HMS Kent joined the Fleet in Scapa in October 1943. From then until 1944 she patrolled the Northern approaches to the Atlantic and escorted more than 18 convoys to Russia.
This picture is from Harry Wright鈥檚 personal collection taken while he was on board HMS Kent.
His son John says: "The crew had to go out and de-ice the guns regularly or the weight of the ice could take the ship over.
"It was so cold you could spend only five minutes out there, or less, before coming in and someone else would have to go out and continue the chipping."
