My father recounted that during the Biltz in Manchester a local factory was hit and although he was only 14 he volunteered to help save some goods.
The smoke was horrid as grease which the factory used was burning. It made him sick. He went home and was fealing awful and went to bed downstairs under the table when his Uncle came in and told him to get out of the house quick as a landmine had landed in the next street. Still fealing sick my dad rushed out with his gran and ran several streets to safety. He then realised he had no pants on and was still very 'green'. His Uncle Peter saw how uncomfortable he was and went back, dispite the land mine in the next street went back for my dads trousers.
My dad never forgot the bravery and kindness shown by his Uncle Peter
