Two years ago I decided that I should look through my video tapes and see just what they contained; especially as I gave up recording a while back finding that the tapes were piling up, and I had not the time or interest to view them. This was a good idea, for after viewing a few minutes of each, I was discarding them quite quickly, my granddaughter has made good use of them, that is, all but one which on seeing I just froze. I must have recorded this around nine or ten years ago, for it was about the 50th anniversary of WW2. Brian Redhead was the narrator, and his opening words were "At 3 pm. On Sunday September 3rd 1939, the first casualty of the war was the sinking of the Athenia." As I mentioned earlier, I froze, and it took me practically two or three weeks to recover from the shock. The reason? I would have been aboard that ship, on my way to my pen friend's family. They had kindly sent the ticket for me, but when my father asked my mother and sister's advice, stating that as our brother, who was in the regular army, and serving out in India, should I be allowed to go or should we all see the forthcoming war together? That's correct, it was the latter that was decided upon otherwise I would not be writing this.
