I joined the TA in 1939 because otherwise I would have been conscripted in another 12 months time; I was only eighteen then.

I loved riding, so decided to join the Norfolk Yeomanry, but it had been mechanised two years earlier! We were stationed at Norwich City football ground at the outbreak of war and played football on the holy turf — not many people have done that!

I survived the war somehow, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this!
