Like many others in Worcester during the war I did my bit for the war effort by being on fire watching duty. There were always two watchers on for four hour shifts at various locations throughout the city.
I used to try and get shifts with my sister Daisy who like myself had a baby so preferred to work the 6-10pm shift. I remember sitting up on the flat roof of Baggot鈥檚 Factory in the Diglis Basin on the lookout for incendiary bomb fires, with a flask of tea and sandwiches to keep us warm. Thankfully nothing ever happened during my shifts, not like the Mecco bombing, but it was exciting all the same.
