Staffs County Council libraries, on behalf of the author, have submitted this story. The author fully understands the rules and regulations of the People's War website.
My memories of the war happened when I was eleven years old. I remember one night a bomb exploded in Forester Street, Longton. Although we were some distance away, I remember a door blowing wide open in our house. We went to look at the damage the following day.
The bomb was dropped by a German bomber returning from a raid on Liverpool. I reckon he had one bomb left and decided to drop it on Longton!!
This story is about my wife who was only five years old at the time of the war. An Aunt of hers had a boyfriend who had come back from abroad. He gave my wife a banana to eat. She said "What's a banana"? She had never seen one before and had no idea what to do with it. Her mother had to show her how to peel it and eat it!!
