I was born at 64 Dursley Road, Shirehampton, Bristol, on 18 May 1939, and the Second World War was about to commence. My father had been called up for military service and was in the Royal Tank Regiment.
My memories of the war were the Americans who were billeted around Shirehampton Park. They were the men of the 282nd -284th Port Company, involved in unloading military aircraft from ships at Avonmouth Docks. The most vivid recollection of the was for me was being taken at night time down to the air raid shelter and listening to the drone of enemy planes above.
I am now 65 years old and although I must have been only five or six years old at that time and obviously not aware waht was going on in my life. I have never forgotten the drone and sound of those planes to this day.
