Terry, aged 3 and next doors dog Toby in Lowfield Road, Kilburn

Some time in 1939 I was evacuated to Bedford with my eldest brother Fred, and my sister Joyce.

All I can remember about this time was being carried on Fred's shoulders and crying for Fred to get some apples. Fred being Fred gave in and got me some of those lovely green apples. The inevitable happened and I got "guts ache" and wanted to go "you know where". By this time we were walking past a big fence to a football or rugby ground. Fred pushed me over the fence to do "the business". That is all I can remember of Bedford!!
