I was 11 when war broke out and I had passed the old scholarship to go to the old city grammar school in the centre of Sheffield. There were two heavy raids in the middle of the city and where all the steel works where. My school was right in the centre of Sheffield. The Thursday night was the heavy bombing when they hit the centre — there was one place Yates Wine lodge, it was so badly hit they couldn’t get bodies out they had to concrete them all in. I walked 4 miles into the city centre to my school — which was damaged. All the ceilings were down in the school — the headmaster was there and he said take as many of your books as you can home. You had a satchel and you did as you where told — I put all my books in my bag and walked all the way home. The city centre was devastated, there was water all over the streets, pipes, railing everything destroyed, bodies everywhere — it was dreadful.
