Most of this story was told to my grandson Michael Wedgwood who has expressed his interest in including it in this site.
I was born in Dundee in 1922 and was therefore about 17 at the start of the war.I worked in the jute mills in Dundee making parachutes for the pilots and was eventually to marry George Sherwin,an armourer in the RAF.
We ultimately made our home in Stoke-on-Trent and Alsager Cheshire.
The home front during World War 2 was fought by men and women who were air-raid wardens and firemen in the home guard, as
well as people from many other walks of life.
I was an air-raid warden and I also did fire watch. We could be called out at any time.In my case it was always at night.
My friend Fay and I were called out two or three times a week and at the same time we would also have to work during the day.
When the sirens sounded during the night we went to our air-raid posts and were given our orders.
My friend and I were out together one night patrolling the neighbourhood as usual when we heard the drone of the planes.I am afraid we were not very brave, as we dashed for cover. We took it in turn to see if it was one of ours or one of theirs.
As it was dark, you can imagine how difficult it was for two girls to try to identify an aircraft.I must admit to staying undercover and hoping for the best.
However we did our best and were very proud to be members of the home guard.
