May worked in Western Rd, Brighton as a stencil hand colourist, painting Davis greeting cards from age 14-18 during the war. The studio where she was worked was opposite Boots the chemist, where they had a tea room with an orchestra. The girls who worked in the studio used to hum along with tunes from the orchestra.
May's social life was very good. May used to dance with her friend Jenny at Brighton Girls Club and also boys from Brighton boys Club. May also used to go dancing at the Dome 3 times per week, and the Regent on Sunday nights. Brighton was full of Canadian soldiers and English sailors at the time, who attended the dances, and escorted the girls home after the dances. Just before the end of the War may joined the Wrens and went to London for 6 weeks training. May was stationed in Cornwall for 2.5 years once the war was over. May then moved on to HMS Kestral in Winchester. She meet her husband who was a soldier, on the train back to Brighton and who also came from Brghton. They were married 6 months later.
