I was a boy living in Castleford when the war broke out. I was living with my mother and two brothers. An A.R.P. warden came to the house and said we had to black out the windows. We didn't know how to do this but my mother suggested using the heavy table cloth to cover the living room window. So the cloth was nailed up. Then she took the light bulbs out of the other rooms. It wasn't until after the war that they were replaced!!
Being a young boy I thought the war was an adventure, we looked for bomb damage but were unaware of people being killed.
