On our way to school one of the things we used to do was, my brother would walk down one side of the street and I on the other. We would count how many buildings had been bombed during the night.
When arriving at school they would look out for all their friends,to make sure that thy
had not been injured in the bombing.
In our school bags we had to carry our I.D cards, ration book, handkerchief, also a small bag of marbles, piece of string to play cats cradle also a pencil and paper to noughts and crosses (OXO)so we would have something to do in the air-raid shelter. We would sing songs like Ten Green Bottles ,This Old Man, and Run Rabbit Run. The singing helped to ease the tention of the horror going on around us.
If Mother knew there was a big air-raid suspected, she would try and take us on the train to Wales to visit my Grandparents. This was where I got my first taste of a fresh egg,as we only had powdered at home.
Beryl was seven years old and Dennis eight when the war ended.
