My school was in a beautiful large house as the original one had suffered a lot of bomb damage. It was situated at the end of Longfield Road, a small unmade road, and it had three levels of lawned garden which I thought was incredible.
We had to take a gasmask with us every day which I have kept all these years. In the playground were some air-raid shelters and once when an air raid was expected we were ushered into one of these shelters and each given a stick of barley sugar to suck. Sometimes after school I was met by my cousin Valerie and we would play on the bombed sites before arriving home. Needless to say we weren't supposed to! Our Aunties' house had been bombed and we were continually looking for 'treasures'. All we ever found was a glass stopper from a vinegar bottle.
